Default Name cards for sit downs?

Do you use name cards for assigned seats for your sit down dinners? If so, how do you select who sits where?

I don't always use name cards, but always seat guests; trying to avoid sitting spouses next to each other and making sure that those who tend to monopolize conversation are not seated in the middle (or next to me)!

Since Christmas dinner was a family affair, I asked DGD to make place cards out of wrapping paper and allowed our eldest DD to arrange seating.

I do the same thing -- name cards.

Have some lovely silver holders that I got about 30 years ago.

Do arrange so that sposes don't sit together and never have the monopolizer near me.
