Default Tips for Eating Better and Feeling Better

  1. Don't skip breakfast. Make yourself sit down with a bowl of high fiber low fat cereal, juice, skim mild and whole wheat toast with jam. Stop eating 3 hours before you go to bed.
  2. Eat a lot of 'colors'. A handful of grapes, an orange, cherry tomatoes and fresh fruit.
  3. When the urge to snack hits, stop and ask yourself if you are really hungry.
  4. Get three servings of calcium a day. Milk, yogurt, fortified orange juice.
  5. Drink lots of water throughout the day. Aim for 8 - 10 glasses. Keep them around the hour, car and work area.
  6. Be sure to add something green to two of your meals.
  7. Shoot for lower calorie snacks: Air popped popcorn, sorbet, frozen fruit bars, pita chips and salsa, veggies ...
  8. Before you reach for that can or cup of soda, drink a glass of water.
  9. if you are a fast food junkie try to start cutting back to one meal a day. Replace it with a healthier choice. continue until you are down to one day a week.
  10. Walk before you eat a snack. When you're finished you may not want it.

Another tip to add to the list: Make sure you get enough sleep. People who have trouble falling asleep at night tend to consume more calories. So make sure you get your excercise in early in the day and that when you go to bed you go to sleep. No TV, no reading, just sleeping. (Well, I'm sure a little calorie consuming excercise wouldn't hurt)

You are right Susan!! On both counts. lol

One thing that works for me on stopping nightime eating...the minute dinner is over, I jump up and brush my teeth. It makes me not want to eat anything but water till bedtime. Sounds silly, but it helps. (I am a nighttime binge snack eater if I don't watch it closely.) Funny, I used to be a nighttime smoker years ago....never smoked before 5:30 in the evening. Wonder if there is a connection?

There are ways to make sure you will do the things that are good for you so you don't feel deprived.

1. Keep water in the ice box. Keep lemons and/or limes washed in a zip lock bag, and put a thin slice of each in your water. Festive.

2. Keep prepared finger-food sized pieces of raw vegies in zip-lock baggies. Use the ends of the lemon or lime above to keep them fresher and colorful longer.

3. When you are absolutely dying for a sweet and special but healthy treat, take 1 washed apple, slice as for pie, and sprinkle with cinnamon. (Can add a little splenda if you need it even sweeter.) If you want it extra special, take 1 scant tablespoon p-nut butter, 1 tablespoon nonfat yogurt and a little of your sweetener of choice(optional), mix well, and dip away. Yum. Beats that corn syrup and chemical laden caramel dip all to heck, and is loaded with nutrition.
