Think about it like this.

There is google, a search engine. How does Google know your site exists? Well they have bots/spiders that go out and crawl websites and they follow links to other sites and crawl them and so on and so forth.

When they crawl a site they index the pages into their search engines so that when people search for a term it might bring up that specific page in the rankings.
