I think sometimes we are way too casual about cleaning our veggies. I know I can be if I am in a hurry. Also eggs. I read it's not the egg that carries the salmonella, it's the shell. I have now gotten into the habit of washing my eggs in soapy water before I put them in the fridge (in a separate container than the one they came in). And, I rinse them off again before I use them. (I'm really not all that paranoid about stuff but after I read the article on what is on them when they come straight from the chicken's nether-region, I knew I had to do this if I were ever to hold an egg in my hands again! I grew up on a farm and was the designated "egg gatherer," so this was a real flip for me.)
